Four tunes for intermediate solo violinist.

In The City & the City, a novel by British author China Miéville, the cities of Besźel and Ul Qoma occupy the same physical location, but each city’s government and citizens “unsee” the other, so that they function as two separate countries.
The double quartet’s two movements depict these cities, with each quartet being the primary “representative” for each city, while the other lurks in the same space. The silences are not fully empty, but carry ghosts of Orciny, a rumoured third city between Besźel and Ul Qoma.
“The City & the City” was premiered by students at Harvard University in May 2012.
